These relay modules are easy to use and have many applications. As these relays are controlled by a 5V DC source, which is readily available on many microcontrollers, these relay modules are a great addition to any Internet-of-Things (IoT) or automation projects.

Example

Using the Interface-Shield to demonstrate how easy it is to use these relays. Of course this is only a simple application, leaving out much of the complexity that can be achieved with automation and a good script.

Current Draw on Trigger Pin

A 5V DC control pin on a microcontroller is needed to switch the relays (one pin per relay). The current drawn on this pin is important to keep in mind. Please check the current draw ratings for the particular microcontroller you are using.

The current draw on the 5V control pin for the 10A relays is about 5mA or less.

The current draw on the 5V control pin for the 30A relays is about 5mA or less.

We recommend to always check the current draw with a multimeter to ensure that the ratings of the trigger pin on the microcontroller are never exceeded.

Current Draw on Power Supply Pin (5V)

If using a microcontroller to not just trigger the relays, but also power the module itself, then please consider the current draw on this pin as well. As an example, the 5V pin on the Arduino Uno R3 can handle 500mA. The 30A, 2-Channel relay module draws less than 5mA when neither of the relays are ON. However, if one of the relays is one, the current draw on the 5V pin goes to about 145mA. If both relays are ON, that current jumps to 225mA. Still within ratings of the Uno R3, but please check with your microcontroller. The 4-Channel relay will consume even more current when all of the relays are on. The tables below are data gathered from our own in-house testing. Please use these results as a guideline only and conduct your own measurements with a multimeter.

10A, 5V 4-Ch Relay Module
# of channels ON Current draw on 5V supply pin
1 75mA
2 129mA
3 172mA
4 206mA

30A, 5V 4-Ch Relay Module
# of channels ON Current draw on 5V supply pin
1 149mA
2 239mA
3 300mA
4 346mA

CAUTION

Working with high voltages/currents, as could potentially be done with these relay modules, can be dangerous, resulting in physical damage, bodily harm or death. We do not recommend, under any circumstance, that inexperienced users operate these relay modules to switch high voltages/currents. Never connect main power devices without the proper assistance from a licensed electrician or engineer. Always follow proper safety precautions. Use these relay modules at your own risk. PTSolns does not take any liability or responsibility in the event of bodily harm or physical damage as a result of improper operation.
