About this item

  • What is an I2C Backpack?: Using the I2C protocol to connect a 1602 LCD or 2004 LCD is fast and simple, requiring only two signal wires plus power and ground to interface with the microcontroller development board. The I2C Backpack, which gets soldered onto the back of the LCD, earns its name by providing this streamlined connection.
  • Compatibility: The I2C Backpack features an onboard boost converter, making it compatible with both 3.3V and 5V microcontroller development boards by automatically handling voltage and signal level shifting. This ensures seamless use with 5V boards like the Uno or Nano, as well as 3.3V boards such as the ESP32. Additionally, it offers flexible connectivity options through a 4-pin screw terminal and a QWIIC connector for easy integration into the I2C bus.
  • Packed with Features: This I2C Backpack is loaded with features, including onboard LCD contrast and backlight control, SCL and SDA oscilloscope test pads for easy debugging, a QWIIC connector, configurable I2C address, and more. For a complete list of features, please refer to the datasheet. You can download the “PTSolns_I2CBackpack” library from GitHub or directly through the Arduino IDE Library Manager, which includes several example sketches to help you get started.
  • What’s Included: Each package includes one (1) PTSolns I2C Backpack, one (1) 1x16 Pin Male Header (short pins), and one (1) 4 Pin screw terminal. LCD is not included. This is a kit, soldering is required.

    Product Description

PTSolns I2C Backpack soldered to 1602 or 2004 LCD, with I2C and power screw terminals and QWIIC connector, supports 3.3V and 5V logic, has contrast and backlight controls, compatible with various microcontrollers.

An LCD backpack like no other

The I2C Backpack interfaces the common 1602 LCD and 2004 LCD to a microcontroller development board via the I2C protocol. It is called a "backpack" as it is intended to be soldered right onto the back of the LCD. Onboard the I2C Backpack is a boost converter as well as a logic level shifter. This allows the user to connect an LCD to either a 3.3V or a 5V microcontroller.

Due to the 3.3V and 5V compatibility, the I2C Backpack works with many common microcontroller development boards including the PTSolns ESP32 microWatt, PTSolns Uno R3+, PTSolns Nano Flip, and a long list of similar boards.

The user can connect the I2C and power wires either directly to the onboard 4-pin screw terminal or via the onboard QWIIC connector. This makes it convenient to easily daisy-chain other modules and sensors that also use the I2C protocol. The I2C Backpack has LCD contrast and LCD backlight control via onboard potentiometers. The board has eight configurable addresses.

To use the I2C Backpack the user should install the PTSolns_I2CBackpack library. Various examples and documentation can be found in the library package. The GitHub library can be found here. Simply install it in Arduino IDE and get started!

This product, along with all of the PTSolns products, comes with a detailed datasheet, and other supporting material. Please view our "PTSolns Documentation Repository" to access these documents.
